Dear 2025 | Ajriani Asrul

Strawberry Generation

Dear Future Self,

I hope the world that you are living in looks different than the one I am living in now – a time in the future when the world is good, better, kind, and clean. You have always believed that the people who live in this world are good. You believe that when people come together, they can make each other and the world around them better. You believe that people have tremendous ability to be kind to one another. You also believe that people want their environments to be clean and will stop at nothing to prioritise the world that they are borrowing from the gods in this lifetime to live in.

Right now, things are not so great. People see differences, not diversity. Our environment continues to deteriorate because of the corporate greed of a few people. Some are wanting to erect walls and not make connections. Tension runs high amongst unspoken words and the realities of some groups of people continue to be unrecognised, even criminalised. A pandemic is sweeping through the world and the world is being forced to reflect on itself. I want to choose to believe that this is a mere bump in the road. History has shown that often, the greater good will prevail and nothing remains the same forever. Things will change.

I hope the world that you are living in looks different than the one I am living in now – a time in the future where the world needs to be. Continue to care and be curious about the world. Never stop believing. Have hope!
